District Description

The territory of the Bauska district was inhabited already after the Ice Age (approximately 7 thousand years B.C.). Till the 13th century, here lived the Baltic tribes - Zemgali. When the crusaders invaded the territory of Latvia, the Bauska district was a part of the Livonia Order state. After the collision between the Order and the Crusaderes, the Kurzeme - Zemgale dukedom was formed, which, at the end of the 18th century, was added to Imperial Russia. In the period in which the dukedom, the district was a part of Jelgava and its main lord of the manor property, but during the period of Tsarist Russia, it was formed as a Bauska circuit and was a part of Kurzeme province.

During World War I, after which Latvia was proclaimed as an independent country, many severe battles took place in the territory of Bauska district. In 1918, the Republic of Latvia's administrative territorial divisions were formed, of which the Bauska district was one of the 19. In 1921, a territory from Lithuania inhabited by Latvians was added.

In 1940, Latvia was occupied by the Soviet Union, and in 1941 by Nazi Germany, however, after the World War II the Soviet occupation regime was renewed. In May 4th, 1990, the Latvian USR Main Council decided to pass the declaration of Independence.
